Easy fix to get you fans running (not hotwire).

Maybe this as been posted, but I did not saw it when I was searching and I thought it could help some 3/S fellow.

Lately I had some overheating problem (as it seems to be the case of many FMIC users), even with a 2'' Koyo radiator. So I wanted my 2 fans to work 'on' to help cooling when needed, but not having both running as soon as the key is in the ignition aka all the time (hotwire).

So I got a relay installed that will make both fans start together full throttle when needed, and will both shut off together when not needed instead of running for nothing. All or nothing.

The procedure is very simple for a 91 (I dunno for the other years, maybe the same or similar), but from the circuit diagram we have to connect the #3 & #6 wires (plug A-55) together and that's it.

Simply put : from the connector near the passenger fan, we connect the blue/black wire to the green/black wire together with a wire and put some electric tape over it!

Pictures worth better then words :

So now both fans start together and stop together! :)

Yes as soon as the AC start, both fans are running as it should!

The only things different are : there is no more low/high speed, only high and there is no more only one fan running, both are running all together, and stop all together.

I'm gonna try this today. Oh and Eric, can't believe you still have a passanger fan on the passanger side. I guess your front mount doesn't have the pipe in the way. I hear to DS's are better. I got by with the passanger side till I put in my koyo. Then it just wouldn't fit anymore.

Thanks guys!

Yeah the passenger side fan was touching the lower IC pipe a bit, but we moved it a bit and it's fitting very tight! We had to push the condenser bolt (along with the AC rad a bit) to make the koyo fit!

Just check if your circuit diagram is the same if it's for your 93.

It's for one of my 91's. Question though, why did you choose a diode over just a wire?

sweet find

still don't know what I am going to do but I believe I am going to try and make my Koyo fit with my IPS tdo5 kit and use two passenger side fans with this wiring.

This might help:

This is IPS' kit with their manifolds and MHI turbos. The fans are both factory DS "slim" A/C fans that were re-wired.

That is an interesting yet inexpensive and effective way of doing it. My friend left his stock '93 VR-4 with me for some work, so I did his fans last week since they were not turning on properly. I discovered that both of those wires [bl/b + gr/b] provided +12v switched that would turn on the DS fan when completed. I jumped the gr/b to ground and installed a separate hot-wire set for the PS main fan, which consists of a 30A relay, 30A fuse, and 10AWG. The car is running 20-30* cooler now lol :D

Just did this on my 1993 3K. Works like a charm. I do have one question though. Does the AC fan run constantly while the system is on? I mean when your running down the road (AC ON) with this mod, will both fans be going all the time?

Hmm..... then I believe I will probably install a switch so I can choose when I want both fans running at high speed. Dont see a reason to have both going when im cruising down the interstate.

I guess it depends on where you live. I usually run okay on a hot day in Phoenix when its 100+ degrees out and my A/C on-on the interstate. But I have been having issues lately if the temperature is 110 and up. The interstate no longer helps since its just too damn hot.

My solution before reading this thread was to just not drive.
